Please can you (any uk people) help out me and my band by voting for us on friday the 18th or saturday 19th if you have enough time and enough spare credit on your phone, by texting 'ROCK ULTRAVIOLETS' to 83936.
We are a three piece all girl band from England and im the drummer. X fm (a london-based rock radio station) recently interviewed us and played our song so we have reason to believe we have a chance and winning the X fm Rock School 2 competition means getting to play in front of 5000 people at Brixton Academy!!!
Please help us.
You can listen to us here: www.myspace.com/ultravioletsband
Or check out the competition info and entries here: www.xfm.co.uk

Set: Westbury, her name is Ruby (after song Ruby Tuesday, Rolling Stones). Yes I name my instruments. My bass is Winston after John Lennon's middle name.
How Long Have I Played?: Not long, on and off for close to a year.
Influence: Keith Moon. Without a doubt I would not be attempting to learn this beautiful instrument if it wasn't for him. He is so amazing, and seems care free when he plays, as if everything in the world stops and its just him. Atleast thats how I feel when I watch him on ol' who footage. I'm certainly not looking at pretty Roger ;)
I basically joined to gain insight, I'm pretty much a beginner... well. I am a beginner, and I can use any knowledge I can get. :)

So Thats me, hope to get to know some girl drummers because I know none. Id love to know maybe, what the music scene is like wherever you all live and what it's like to be a (GIRL) Drummer in that kinda atmosphere. If that's not too weird that I'd like to know about that.... :D

I know this probably isnt.. usual, but I was just wanting to get into drumming.. I have never even touched a drum set.. Its just something I always wanted to do, but never had the oppertunity.. now that Im in college I want to take some lessons.. and I figured you girls might be able to help me with a few questions I have..
how long does it take for you to be good enough to actually play in a like.. band? and are some people just natural at it? because Im usually bad at everything.. (including life) and.. I hope its something that just as long as you practice alot you can get the hang of..
Sorry if this kind of post isnt allowed, feel free to delete it.. I was just wondering.. and btw. I really respect you girls.. keep it up! Mabey someday Ill actually be able to join this community as a real drummer *grin*

hi i'm a long time watcher and first time poster. i'm part of a collective called manifesta based in leeds, UK that puts on gigs, club nights and events with a special slant to appreciating the amazing and underappreciated female talent in the world. i'm also in a band called black bats where i scream me head off and play bass http://www.blackbats.co.uk we've got downloadable mp3's on http://www.mp3unsigned.com i used to drum for a band called the holy terror and have played the guitar since i was thirteen. so i'm dead passionate about women in music etc so much that i'm doing my ma dissertation (gender studies at leeds uni, UK) on 'becoming a musician'. where i'm interviewing women musicians about how they got into making music and also circulating a questionnaire to men and women, musicians and non-musicians. it would be so helpful and i would be so grateful if you could take some time out to fill in a questionnaire for me it should only take about ten minutes.
it's about your musical interests (what genres of music you like, how often you go to gigs etc), if you play an instrument how you started playing your musical instrument/ forming your band. it's looking at general experiences and perceptions of your music scene with plenty of space to rant. it also has some attitude-y type questions about barriers towards women in music making and things like that. i reckon you'd have some really interesting stories. it's all anonymous and no one will be able to identify you from your answers. i'd be well chuffed if you could help me out i could email it to you as a word file, or post it to you (with sae).
email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or leave a message on my livejournal or myspace at http://www.myspace.com/ju_venile
if you know anyone else who'd be interested please forward this message. sorry for any cross posting think i will go a bit crazy all over the internet today!
